Quick Hits
Ethan Strand ran the 2nd fastest collegiate 1500m ever - 3:33.22.
Grant Fisher bags another $100k at Grand Slam Track. Great racing from him, but perhaps a bit overshadowed by the arrest of Fred Kerley the day before. His statement is here and said he was arrested for remaining silent during a physical altercation.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen is getting his own Nike colorway for racing shoes, coming May 15th.
Trail ultra Cocodona 250 is going on right now. Keep an eye on Courtney Dauwaulter.
If you ordered anything from Currently Running, it should have shipped!

On Running Culture, Capitalism, Gatekeeping
Recently the comment section on an Instagram post blew up. I honestly enjoy Tempo Journal and they do far more than just posting on Instagram. There’s a full website with c, and I think some of the language of “hitting peak” was thrown around. The comments section exposed a feeling that I’ve certainly had: fatigue and inundation with the latest things, events, and influencers and faceless Instagram accounts reposting the same images over and over claiming that it is “running culture.”
This newsletter is a commentary on a running fashion, marketing, brands, and the overlap between it all in the space. I critique areas of running culture. I am not creating, cultivating, and unlikely am I influencing running culture. It is so much older, richer, and vaster than this newsletter, new apparel coming out, the latest popup, or any vibey Instagram moodboard.
I enjoy all these things. It’s exciting, it’s cool to have a range of choices in my running gear, it’s great to have more activities tailored to me, and more people to run with.
I agree with
on all of this. There’s no peak running culture. Most of the running done outside of a handful of niche run clubs posted on Instagram does not look like what is on Instagram. Running is best when it doesn’t try to be cool.and on the topic of new stuff…
Upcoming and Recent Releases
Brooks Retros the Cascadia
Brooks has already brought back some of their trail shoes as lifestyle silhouettes in OG colorways. They’re taking a page out of the Nike, New Balance, Saucony, Asics…now that I think about it just about every brand’s book. A bit late to the party on the lifestyle side, but I have so much love for the Cascadias.
The OG Brooks Cascadia was designed in partnership with trail icon Scott Jurek as he swept the ultra scene in the aughts and 2010s and was one of the first to really do it. The Cascadia was the shoe that carried him through it all and deserves a spot in the hall of fame. I’d love to see Brooks involve him in a fresh lifestyle colorway besides these throwbacks.
Ultralight Carbon: Asics METASPEED RAY
We’re back to the battle of the lightest between the new Asics METASPEED RAY (129 g), Adios Pro Evo 2 (138g), , Puma Fast R-3 (170g) On Cloudboom Strike LS (188g). Nike’s Alphafly 3 weighs in at a still competitive 176g.
Before supercritical foams and plates, the fastest racing flats and spikes were the lightest. My favorite (and still favorite?) spikes were the sub 100g Nike Zoom Victories. Nobody runs in them now because they’re functionally 2mm of plastic and 4mm of foam. With the latest technology, we can have both a fat foam stack, and a plate.
This however, comes at the cost of durability (and price). The shoes are a bit closer to old Mayfly shoes which were designed to last less than 100km, but cost almost double. The METASPEED™ RAY will be available August 12th.
Spring 2025 MILER RUNNING
MILER is breaking away from the all black and gray, adding “Bluestone” (gray blue) and “Limestone” (taupe) to their existing silhouettes. The color and names call back to the stone sidewalks in New York neighborhoods, which I can get behind. They also look nice and feel soft. Glad we’re seeing some color get back into the high end minimal brands! Their spring collection will be available Thursday, May 8 at 9:00 am. I have their cropped Coolmax mesh tee and love it…but now might need one in Bluestone.
Gnuhr Outdoor Apparel
I love Gnuhr’s stuff, especially their crewneck and hoodie Polartec Alpha, which I’ve written about before. They recently put out some innovative apparel: a translucent parchment windbreaker and a special engineered waistband short. The cream or white translucent shell has been the trend this year, with this vellum-esque shell taking the cake in my opinion. The Warp Short, while now sold out, is pretty innovative offering a customizable pocket setup built into the waistband.

On x PLEASURES x The Loop
On teamed up with streetwear label PLEASURES and beloved Austin running store, The Loop Running Supply on a capsule collection. I wrote about this last week, but it comes out May 8th.
I still don’t entirely understand the why between each of these brands as PLEASURES is an LA streetwear brand and The Loop is a popular Austin running store.

Not much in Nike’s pipeline.
So far not too much besides the Vomero Plus and a few “signature” colorways. Jakub is the second runner to get his own colorway series behind Eliud. His line is decidedly boring in comparison to the clay stained bright green hues on Kipchoge’s. Faith Kipyegon’s (bottom) seem a bit more exciting.

If you’re digging Running Supply, the best way you can help me out is to drop me an email sharing what you love about it and forward this to a friend.
Typo on Jakob's name at the top.
